Extraordinary “Thailandia” bed designed by Architects Ciansky and Shelba with Luciano Frigerio for Frigerio di Desio in the late 1960s.
This bed is special because it is the first cast brass bed produced by Frigerio di Desio, and a tribute to the beds created twenty years earlier by Arnaldo Pomodoro in collaboration with Osvaldo Borsani, friends and connoisseurs of sculptural furniture. After this bed, Frigerio would go on to produce hundreds of sculptural models between 1960 and 1990.
Made of cast and hammered brass elements with geometric motifs and sculptural plates, also cast and sculpted by Luciano Frigerio.
It is complete and in excellent condition, as shown in the photographs.
The bed is sold with the original certificate of authenticity issued by the Frigerio heirs.

Luciano Frigerio, born in Desio in 1928, left an indelible mark on the world of design and furniture production, inheriting a family tradition of high-end cabinetry. His early education, completed with a diploma in accounting at Collegio Pio XI, was enriched by his passion for furniture design and musical composition.

The socio-economic context of Brianza in the 1960s offered entrepreneurial opportunities in the field of furniture art, and Frigerio was able to seize these possibilities. His frequenting of renowned workshops and encounters with prominent figures such as Gio Ponti and Franco Albini inspired the transformation of the family business into a company oriented toward the international market. In 1973, Frigerio was awarded the title of Commendatore della Repubblica Italiana, in recognition of his dedication to high-end cabinetry.

The defining element of his career emerged with the realization of his dream: furniture as a unique piece. Frigerio, supported by a team of technicians, created sculptural furniture in solid wood and sculptural beds in cast bronze, representing a unique alternative to the industrial production of the time. These unique pieces embody artisanal excellence and the fusion of precious materials, positioning themselves as works of art within the design landscape.

Collaboration with renowned Italian architects and designers, including Franco Albini, Sergio Asti and Paolo Portoghesi, consolidated Frigerio’s position in the design world. His belief that architects could design unique furniture for high-end cabinetry guided the company’s philosophy, characterized by the production of numbered and signed pieces, each one unique. During the 1970s and 1990s, the company expanded its presence by opening ten showrooms in major Italian cities.

Recognition of his contributions to design culminated in the conferment of the title of Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem in 1989. Frigerio’s works adorn important art galleries in Italy and abroad, receiving awards at events such as the Salone Internazionale del Mobile Italiano and Abitare il Tempo.

Permanent exhibitions in Milan, including Galleria del Sagrato and the “Art Gallery” on Via Montenapoleone, testify to Frigerio’s constant and recognized presence at the heart of the Milanese artistic scene. His legacy lives on through exclusive works, celebrating the meeting of functionality, aesthetics and artisanal mastery in the world of furniture and art. His heritage continues to influence contemporary design, remaining a point of reference for innovation and excellence in the field.
