Overview
Iconic “Mezzo Oracolo” table lamp designed by Gae Aulenti for Artemide in 1969, featuring a large white opaline glass globe resting on a cylindrical dark brown lacquered metal base.
Its striking proportions and minimalist geometric construction make it a distinctive example of Italian Space Age lighting.
Description
The Mezzo Oracolo lamp is defined by the relationship between two elementary geometric forms: a luminous sphere and a solid cylindrical pedestal.
The large glass globe sits directly above the metal base, creating a balanced composition in which the diffuser appears almost suspended.
The cylindrical structure features narrow vertical openings near its upper edge and a distinctive horizontal perforated metal band running around its circumference.
The simplicity of the silhouette conceals a carefully considered construction, with the perforated section introducing an additional visual element without disturbing the lamp's clean architectural profile.
Design & Function
One of the most interesting features of the Mezzo Oracolo is its two-level lighting concept.
The opaline glass sphere provides soft, diffused illumination, while the perforated section of the base allows additional light to emerge through the small circular openings.
When illuminated, these two elements create a particularly atmospheric effect: the globe becomes a uniform luminous volume, while the lower section introduces a warmer, more concentrated glow.
The lamp is suitable for use on a substantial console, sideboard, or low table, where its sculptural proportions can be fully appreciated.
Materials & Aesthetic
The design combines white opaline glass, dark brown lacquered metal, and a contrasting golden-toned perforated metal band.
The glossy glass diffuser contrasts with the more restrained finish of the cylindrical base. The fine perforations introduce a delicate industrial texture, characteristic of the experimental material language of late-1960s Italian lighting.
Its warm brown and white colour palette gives the lamp a distinctive visual identity, balancing futuristic geometry with understated elegance.
