Overview
Refined “Pitagora” coffee table designed by Ennio Fazioli and Renato Venturi for MIM – Mobili Italiani Moderni in the 1960s, featuring a dark reddish-brown laminate tabletop with African rosewood edges and a distinctive metal supporting structure.
The table embodies the principles of Italian postwar Rationalism, combining geometric precision, industrial construction, and carefully selected materials in an understated architectural composition.
Description
The Pitagora coffee table features an elongated rectangular tabletop with subtly chamfered corners, supported by four slender cylindrical metal legs.
Its most distinctive feature is the cast aluminum corner joint system, which connects the tabletop to the legs through four sculptural triangular elements.
Rather than concealing these connections beneath the surface, the designers made them an integral part of the table's visual identity.
Each joint extends outward from the underside of the tabletop before transitioning into a cylindrical leg, creating an elegant structural detail that distinguishes the Pitagora series.
The broad horizontal surface contrasts with the delicate metal supports, giving the table a light and balanced appearance.
Design & Function
The Pitagora model reflects a design philosophy in which structural elements become an essential part of the aesthetic composition.
The innovative corner connections were developed as a distinctive system of metal components, integrating the tabletop and legs into a coherent architectural structure.
The chamfered corners allow these joints to remain visible within the overall rectangular outline.
Originally conceived within MIM's approach to modern furniture for residential and professional environments, the table combines practical functionality with the formal clarity of Italian industrial design.
Materials & Aesthetic
The tabletop is finished in dark reddish-brown laminate, bordered by African rosewood, which introduces a refined natural material contrast.
The rosewood edges provide definition and warmth, while the laminate offers a smooth, continuous surface.
The cylindrical legs feature a dark metal finish, contrasting with the matte silver-grey appearance of the cast aluminum corner joints.
The combination of wood, laminate, and exposed metal construction creates a restrained industrial aesthetic characteristic of Italian modernist furniture.

Collectibility
The Pitagora coffee table represents an interesting example of the technical experimentation pursued by MIM during the 1960s.
Its distinctive corner joint system, subsequently developed across a broader range of Pitagora furniture, is particularly significant for its innovative integration of structural engineering and visual design.
The model is appealing to collectors of Italian Rationalist furniture, mid-century modern design, and historic MIM production, particularly for its recognizable construction and refined material combination.
Designer & Manufacturer
Ennio Fazioli was an Italian furniture entrepreneur and designer who established MIM – Mobili Italiani Moderni in 1958, pursuing a new approach to furniture production that combined industrial innovation with the elegance of Italian design.
Renato Venturi collaborated with MIM on furniture characterized by functional clarity, technical experimentation, and carefully developed structural solutions. The Pitagora series is particularly representative of this approach.
MIM became an important name in postwar Italian furniture design, collaborating with architects and designers including Ico Parisi and Renato Venturi. Its production encompassed residential and office furniture, with particular attention to modern materials, modular systems, and industrial manufacturing techniques.
