Overview
A bold abstract ceramic vase from the 1980s, glazed in vivid orange, with a flat, sculptural slab form and a jagged, dynamic silhouette pierced by smooth openings. A striking Space Age / postmodern decorative object that doubles as a vase.
Description
This vase captures the playful, futuristic spirit of 1980s design.
Modelled as a flat ceramic slab, it rises in an irregular, spiky silhouette — part splash, part star, part flame — pierced by oval and dumbbell-shaped cut-outs that play solid against void. The surface is finished in a glossy, saturated orange glaze with a subtle speckle. Openings at the top allow it to hold flowers or single stems, though it is just as compelling left empty, as pure sculpture. Flat-sided and graphic, it reads almost like a frozen gesture suspended in space.
Design & Function
Conceived as a flower vase, with openings at the top, it works above all as a sculptural statement piece on a console, shelf, mantelpiece or sideboard. The pierced voids lighten the mass and give it a dynamic, almost kinetic energy, while the bright pop colour makes it an instant focal point.
It is equally at home holding a few stems or standing alone as a decorative object.
Materials & Aesthetic
Made of glazed ceramic in a saturated orange, the piece fully embodies the postmodern, Space Age aesthetic of the 1980s — bold colour, abstract geometry and a sense of fun and futurism, recalling the era of Memphis and New Wave Italian design. The glossy glaze and sculptural cut-outs make it feel both graphic and tactile, and its silhouette changes intriguingly when viewed from different angles.

Collectibility
1980s postmodern and Space Age ceramics are increasingly sought after for their bold colour, sculptural daring and optimistic, futuristic spirit. This abstract orange vase is a striking statement piece — a versatile pop of colour and form that suits both retro and contemporary interiors, and an ideal entry point for collectors of late-20th-century design.
Designer & Manufacturer
This vase belongs to the wave of bold, sculptural ceramics produced in Italy during the 1980s, when designers embraced abstract geometry, vivid monochrome glazes and a playful, Space Age sensibility in the spirit of the Memphis and postmodern movements. Although unsigned, it is a characteristic and confident example of that moment, prized today for its strong colour and sculptural presence.
