Overview

Distinctive “Gran Visir” lounge armchair designed by Luciano Frigerio for Frigerio di Desio, Italy, circa 1970, featuring a sculptural glossy black lacquered wooden frame and generous rust-colored suede leather upholstery with goose-down filling.

Its low, enveloping silhouette combines architectural structure with exceptional softness, creating a striking example of expressive 1970s Italian furniture design.

Description

The Gran Visir armchair is characterized by its generously upholstered seat and backrest, supported by a series of curved black lacquered wooden elements.

The deep seat cushion features softly rounded edges and natural gathers in the suede, while the reclining backrest provides an inviting, relaxed seating position.

Particularly distinctive is the exposed wooden framework, consisting of four sculptural curved supports that follow the contours of the backrest and extend beneath the seat. Their rhythmic arrangement gives the chair a recognizable architectural identity, especially when viewed from behind.

The absence of conventional armrests enhances its open, informal proportions, allowing the upholstery to remain the central element of the design.

Design & Function

The Gran Visir explores the relationship between a rigid supporting structure and soft, generously proportioned upholstery.

The goose-down filling provides a yielding, comfortable seating experience, while the external wooden supports create a stable framework without compromising the chair's relaxed appearance.

Its low profile and deep seating area make it particularly suitable for lounge environments and informal living spaces.

Materials & Aesthetic

The armchair combines glossy black lacquered wood and rust-orange suede leather, creating a sophisticated contrast between reflective and matte surfaces.

The suede has a rich, velvety texture with subtle tonal variations that respond naturally to light and touch. Its warm terracotta coloration emphasizes the softness of the cushions, while the black lacquer introduces definition and visual depth.

The gently gathered upholstery contributes to the chair's characteristic relaxed appearance, balancing its sculptural wooden construction.
