Overview

An exceptionally rare Gaetano Sideboard designed by Luciano Frigerio for Frigerio di Desio in the 1970s, crafted in richly toned Padouk wood and distinguished by its extraordinary sculptural façade.

The Gaetano model belongs to Luciano Frigerio’s celebrated “Scultura 99” series, produced in a strictly limited edition of only 99 examples. This extremely restricted production makes the model particularly rare and highly collectible, representing one of the most sculptural expressions of Frigerio’s approach to furniture design.

Description

This impressive Gaetano sideboard, designed by Luciano Frigerio and produced by Frigerio di Desio in the 1970s, is characterized by a monumental architectural structure entirely dominated by the warm, deep reddish-brown tones of Padouk wood.

The defining feature of the piece is its remarkable sculptural front, composed of a dense sequence of vertical wooden elements individually shaped into projecting and recessed profiles. Their alternating depths create a rhythmic three-dimensional surface that changes continuously according to the viewing angle and the direction of the light.

Rather than applying decoration to a conventional cabinet, Frigerio integrates the sculptural treatment directly into the architecture of the furniture. When closed, the doors visually disappear within the continuous composition of vertical elements, giving the chest the appearance of a large abstract wooden relief.

The long rectangular top and substantial plinth frame the composition horizontally, creating a deliberate contrast with the strong vertical rhythm of the façade.

Behind the sculptural doors, the sideboard reveals a functional interior fitted with four wooden drawers, each equipped with a small brass knob. The contrast between the highly articulated exterior and the more restrained internal organization perfectly expresses the balance between sculpture and functionality that characterizes the piece.

Design & Function

The Gaetano sideboard is conceived simultaneously as storage furniture and sculptural object.

Its long, low rectangular body is divided internally into separate storage compartments concealed behind the sculptural doors. Once opened, the doors reveal a series of internal drawers, providing generous and organized storage while leaving the exterior completely free from conventional handles or visible drawer fronts.

The sculpted vertical elements themselves become part of the visual and functional identity of the doors. Their alternating projections create a dynamic façade while preserving the strong architectural character of the cabinet.

This combination of concealed storage, substantial proportions and an exceptionally elaborate exterior makes the Gaetano equally suitable as a sideboard, bedroom storage cabinet or statement credenza.

Materials & Aesthetic

The sideboard is crafted in Padouk wood, whose naturally rich reddish and deep brown tonal variations strongly contribute to the visual character of the piece.

The material becomes particularly expressive across the sculptural façade, where the projecting wooden elements interact with light and shadow to emphasize their different depths and curved transitions.

The polished surfaces of the Padouk highlight its grain and warm chromatic variations, while the small brass knobs found on the internal drawers introduce a discreet metallic detail without disturbing the predominantly wooden composition.

The result is simultaneously architectural, decorative and sculptural: a piece in which the natural character of the wood becomes inseparable from the design itself.

Collectibility

The Gaetano model represents an important example of Luciano Frigerio’s highly distinctive approach to furniture, where traditional cabinetmaking is transformed through a strongly sculptural treatment of the surface.

Most importantly, the Gaetano belongs to Frigerio’s celebrated “Scultura 99” series, produced in a strictly limited edition of only 99 examples. This extremely restricted production makes the model exceptionally rare and highly collectible, with surviving examples appearing only infrequently on the market.

The large scale of this sideboard allows the sculptural language of the Gaetano series to reach its fullest expression: the repeated Padouk elements extend across the entire façade, transforming the cabinet into an imposing three-dimensional composition.

Its rarity, distinctive construction and strong visual identity make it particularly desirable for collectors of Luciano Frigerio, Frigerio di Desio and important Italian design of the 1970s.

It is sold with a certificate of authenticity issued by the Luciano Frigerio Official Archive, of which JF Gallery Design is the current custodian, confirming its attribution and its historical and collectible importance.

Designer & Manufacturer

Luciano Frigerio was an Italian designer whose work developed around the idea of bringing together furniture-making, craftsmanship and sculpture. Working within Frigerio di Desio, he developed a highly recognizable design language characterized by substantial proportions, precious woods, carefully executed details and an increasingly sculptural interpretation of furniture.

His work from the 1960s and 1970s frequently challenged the conventional distinction between functional furniture and decorative art, with cabinets, tables and other furnishings conceived as strong architectural presences within an interior.

The Scultura 99 series is particularly representative of this approach, combining functional furniture with elaborate three-dimensional wooden compositions and highly limited production.
