Description
This elegant pair of Prisma table lamps was designed by Studio A.R.D.I.T.I. and produced by Sormani in 1970, representing a particularly refined expression of the geometric experimentation that characterized Italian design during the period.
Each lamp is conceived as a compact cube, constructed from individual glass and mirrored panels held together by visible metal fittings. The structure deliberately avoids a conventional lampshade: instead, the light source is enclosed within the transparent and reflective architecture of the lamp itself.
When switched off, the Prisma presents an almost abstract appearance, with its dark mirrored surfaces, exposed edges and regularly positioned metal fasteners emphasizing the purity of the cubic volume.
Once illuminated, its character changes dramatically. The internal bulb is repeatedly reflected across the mirrored surfaces, creating an extraordinary multiplication of light within the cube. The result is an optical composition in which the boundaries between the physical structure, reflections and light become increasingly difficult to distinguish.
Each cube rests on a low cylindrical black base, visually separating the glass volume from the supporting surface and reinforcing its sculptural presence.
The lamps are offered as a matching pair, and the original manufacturer’s label reading “nucleo – divisione della sormani s.p.a. – 22060 arosio – italia” remains present, providing direct evidence of their production by Sormani.
Design & Function
The Prisma is based on an exceptionally simple geometric principle: a luminous source contained within a cube.
Rather than concealing the bulb behind a traditional shade, Studio A.R.D.I.T.I. uses the surrounding glass and mirrored panels as an active component of the lighting effect. The internal reflections multiply the light source in different directions, producing an atmospheric and highly decorative illumination.
The visible metal fixing elements become part of the composition rather than being concealed, reinforcing the technical and architectural character of the design.
Their compact proportions make the lamps particularly suitable as table lamps, desk lamps, bedside lamps or accent lighting, while their strong sculptural identity allows them to function as decorative objects even when switched off.
Materials & Aesthetic
Glass and mirror define the entire visual language of the Prisma lamps.
The transparent surfaces expose the construction of the object, while the mirrored panels introduce depth, reflection and an almost immaterial quality. When illuminated, these surfaces repeatedly capture and reproduce the central light source, creating a warm kaleidoscopic effect within the strict geometry of the cube.
The contrast between the reflective glass structure, the small metal fittings and the understated black cylindrical base gives the lamps a distinctly architectural character.
